Week 12 - The Final Week

The idea of self/existing with the self The reason that I chose the self was because I believe at the end there really is only the self. All other things – work, family, money, partners, logic, god – all these things are purely temporary in the end. The one thing that you’re stuck with, day-in day-out, is yourself. Your mind, your thoughts, and your philosophy; and thus the goal of life should be to train the self to be as healthy and high-performing as possible. Freeing yourself from the influence of others (environment vs. true self) I don’t believe that there is really a way to completely free yourself from the influence of society. Like I mentioned previously, the essence of society itself comes before your existence, and due to the age of society and its grasp upon the world, it will always in at least some way circumvent you from acting completely independently. But I think that that’s alright, since there is no real reason to act completely independently; just take the...

Week 11 -- Sartre/de Beauvoir

Why we put ourselves in bad faith I believe this ties back into the ideal self scenario that I’ve come back to on multiple occasions. I believe that it could be that people who have a less clear definition of who their ideal self is can fall into the trap of bad faith, as they are not aware of what their authenticity actually entails. Thus, we do not put ourselves in bad faith, but rather bad faith puts itself into us. A person becoming a label I definitely believe a person can be typecast, mostly due to the stereotyping bias that is natural in human beings. I also believe that a person can typecast themselves given that they listen too much to that feedback from society rather than from themselves. Acting in bad faith/sincerity simultaneously I don’t think this is objectively possible… however, it could occur on a perspective basis if a person internally is confusing bad faith with their own sincerity. This goes back to the first topic where a person is not aw...

Week 10 -- Jean Paul Sartre

Essence vs. Existence I feel as though you could take either of these both ways very, very easily. I could say that existence would come before essence, in which case I look at a more individualized view where a person builds their essence over time. Alternatively, I could say that essence comes before existence, which takes a societal view where the “collective unconscious” of the people is eventually transferred to each new person born. Actions responsible for impact in humanity I feel like each action has some impact on humanity, even if it is negligent. At the end of the day, you’re still contributing something to the world, and that can have its own rippling effects towards a wider scope. Honestly, I believe this clause fits better with the essence before existence theory, as for each person adds a piece to the collective unconscious, that will further build future generations. The Decision-making of Individuals I believe that people will always make the decision...
